5 Ways to Save Water!

Water conservation starts at home

We’re still in the month of Muharram, and for this month, we are focusing on our Care for Clean Water projects. With that, let us reflect on how we take this precious resource for granted coming from a first world country, and let’s learn how to use water better.

Here are 5 ways you can learn to save water in your own home!

1. Don’t leave the water running

Whether it’s brushing your teeth or shaving your facial hair, turn off the tap and don’t leave the water running! Save 6 litres of water a minute by turning off your tap while you brush your teeth.

Washing vegetables can also be done in a container of water as well.

 2. Take shorter showers

A typical shower uses 20 to 25 litres of water a minute! If you must take a long shower, remember to turn off your shower head while soaping up or shampooing.

You can also try to set a timer on your phone to keep your showers short and water-saving. Switching to an efficient shower head will allow you to lather up in less water, which means you’ll be saving water and cutting your bills.

3. Don’t use your toilet as a dustbin

Every cigarette butt, tissue or other small bits of trash you dump into your toilet flushes away up to 17 litres of water. Put them in the trash instead, or better yet, recycle what can be recycled.

4. Save up your dirty clothes

Washing a full machine load of clothes uses less water and energy than 2 half-loads. This also means lower bills as well. For partial loads, remember to adjust the water levels to match the size of the load.

5. Check pipes and faucets for leaks

Leaks, especially those that go unnoticed, can be very wasteful. A small drip from a worn faucet washer can waste up to 75 litres of water per day, while larger leaks can waste a lot more. Some leaks are easily spotted, but others take a little more effort to locate.

One way to check is: dry sinks and tubs thoroughly and allow to sit for an hour, if you notice wetness, there’s a leak. Ensure that you are not paying bills unnecessarily but checking for these water leaks that might happen.

Let’s all practice more water conserving ways and don’t let water consumption run out of control. By saving water in our homes, not only are we saving a precious resource, we are also able to save money on utility bills.
