Bringing Clean Water to Cambodia

Out of its population of 16 million people, 72% of Cambodia’s population – 12 million people – lack access to a reliable, safely managed source of water. An estimated 75% of Cambodians live in rural areas.

Many countries worldwide face the harsh reality of water scarcity due to factors such as overpopulation, pollution, and lack of basic hygiene practices. Even though Southeast Asia is known for heavy rainfall, it does not mean that there is plenty of clean water to go around.

LACK OF CLEAN WATER PROMINENT IN RURAL AREAS WITH NON-EXISTENT INFRASTRUCTURE

Cambodia – a largely rural nation – may be one of the fastest growing economies in Asia, but the lack of access to clean water still remains a barrier for families to obtain one of the vital sources of life. Unfortunately, the country is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Most of the time, those living in rural areas have no choice but to travel far to access clean water.

HOW WE’RE HELPING THESE COMMUNITIES

Through our Care for Clean Water project, we’re helping the communities in need, one well at a time. Recently, our Global Ehsan Relief Cambodia team extended a helping hand to Mdm Tey, a 70-year-old grandmother who lives in the Kbal Beong Sēh Village, Kor Commune, Tboung Khmum Province.

“I live in a small, ramshackle house with my widowed daughter who has one child. I used to make a living by farming, but I am no longer able to work as much as I used to. Now, I rely on my daughter to support me,” Mdm Tey shared.

“Before Global Ehsan Relief Cambodia built a Hybrid Water Well for my family, I had to carry water from my neighbour’s well. This was a very difficult task for me as I am old and frail. I often had to walk long distances to get water, and I would often get pain in my joints as I carried water at least twice a day.”

“Fortunately, when the hybrid water well was completed, I was so grateful. My child and I no longer have to carry water from my neighbor’s well.”

Mdm Tey, Hybrid Water Well beneficary

Mdm Tey said gratefully: “The Hybrid Water Well has had a huge impact on my life and the lives of my family. We are now able to drink clean water, and we no longer have to spend time and energy fetching water. This has given us more time to focus on our other activities, such as farming and taking care of our family. I am so grateful to Global Ehsan Relief Cambodia for building this Hybrid Water Well for my family. It has made a big difference in our lives, and I will never forget their kindness. May Allah S.W.T. bless you and extend your life with happiness and prosperity.”

Give the best charity today by building a Water Well with your family and friends. You can help to supply rural communities and families like Mdm Tey with clean water and ensure that they will have a better standard of living for their future.
