Ramadhan Is Here – Will You Let It Change You?

Ramadhan has the power to change us in many ways - mentally and physically, but also spiritually, transforming us into better Muslims. Here's how Ramadhan builds Taqwa in our hearts!

There is a reason the heart feels different in Ramadhan.

Even before the first sahoor, something stirs within the believer - an awareness that these days are unlike any other. Allah SWT did not simply command us to fast; He gifted us an entire month designed to transform us from within.

When we think of fasting, we think of hunger and thirst. And yes, the body feels it: the dryness of the throat in the afternoon heat, the quiet rumble that reminds us we are human. But our beloved Prophet SAW warned us: "Many a fasting person has nothing from his fast except hunger and thirst." (Ibn Majah)

The fast Allah SWT truly desires from us is one of the soul - a fast of the tongue from idle speech, a fast of the eyes from that which displeases Him, a fast of the heart from envy and pride. When we fast this way, something remarkable happens: Taqwa begins to take root.

Taqwa: The Hidden Harvest of Ramadhan

Allah SWT tells us plainly in Surah Al-Baqarah:

"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you - that you may attain Taqwa." (2:183)

Taqwa. That God-consciousness that makes a person pause before a sin, that nudges the heart back toward what is right, even when no one is watching. It is the ultimate fruit of this blessed month.

How does fasting grow Taqwa? Because fasting is the most private of all acts of worship. No one sees you struggling through hunger. No one witnesses the moment you swallow back a harsh word instead of speaking it. It is between you and Allah alone - and it is precisely in that private space that your Taqwa is built, brick by brick, day by day.

Every Ramadhan is an enrolment in a school that most of us should never miss. The curriculum is demanding, but the rewards are extraordinary. We learn:

  • Discipline; that desire can be mastered, that we need not always get what we want.
  • Unity; in mosques, in homes, across continents - Muslims fast together, pray together, and turn together toward the One who sustains us all.
  • Empathy; the hunger we experience in daylight hours draws our hearts closer to the millions around the world who do not break their fast come Maghrib; for them, hunger simply continues.

This is Ramadhan in its fullness. Not merely an absence of food, but a presence of Allah in every moment, encouraging us to become better people.

Let Your Fast Bear Fruit Beyond Yourself

Here is a truth that is easy to overlook: the Taqwa Ramadhan builds in us is not meant to stay locked inside. A heart softened by Taqwa is a heart ready to give.

The Prophet SAW was known to be the most generous of people, and "he was most generous during Ramadhan." (Bukhari) His generosity in this month was described as a wind that withholds nothing from anyone in its path.

When we give in Ramadhan, we are following his Sunnah and letting the fruits of our newfound Taqwa reach others.

Somewhere right now, a child is waiting for a meal. A widow is continuing her fast after Maghrib so that her kids can eat. An orphan is dreaming of a gift to celebrate Eid. A community is thirsty for clean water that our hands could help provide.

You have the power to reach all of them this Ramadhan.

Make This Ramadhan Count

At Global Ehsan Relief, we strive to reach the most needy around the world with our Ramadhan initiatives. From daily Iftar meals for Gaza, to Eid gifts for orphans, to our Best 10 Nights campaign for those precious final days, we need your help to make their Ramadhan a joyful one this year.

There’s something for everyone to do, no matter how big or small!

May Allah SWT grant you Taqwa in this blessed month, accept your fasting and ibadah, and multiply your rewards, ameen.
