Water is Mercy: Ensure Clean Water for All this Muharram

This Muharram, give the gift that matters most. Discover how Global Ehsan Relief's clean water projects are reaching families in Gaza, Syria, Yemen, and beyond, and how your sadaqah can keep flowing long after this sacred month ends.

Alhamdulillah, a new Islamic year has begun! Muharram is a month of reflection, renewal, and drawing closer to Allah through acts of mercy and compassion.

As we welcome this blessed month, Global Ehsan Relief is launching our biggest water campaign yet, with a goal of delivering 1,000 water wells and 1,000 water tankers to communities in need across the globe. Because if there is one gift that embodies the spirit of Muharram, it is the gift of clean water

Why Water in Muharram?

Muharram is a month that calls us to reflect on sacrifice and mercy. And when we look at the world around us, one of the greatest forms of mercy we can offer is something so simple that many of us take it completely for granted: a safe drink of water.

The Prophet SAW was asked what the best form of charity is. His answer was clear:

"Giving water to drink."
— Sunan Ibn Majah 3684

Muharram also carries deep historical weight for Muslims and holds a powerful reminder. In 61 AH, on the plains of Karbala, Husayn ibn Ali, the beloved grandson of the Prophet SAW, and his companions were besieged and cut off from the Euphrates river for three days before the tragedy of Karbala. Among the most devastating weapons used against them was the denial of water. Women, children, and the faithful were left without a single drop in the scorching heat of the Iraqi desert for days before meeting their deaths.

Water, withheld as an act of cruelty.

Today, millions of families around the world are living that reality - not through siege, but through poverty, conflict, and broken infrastructure. Over 2 billion people still lack access to safe drinking water. Women and girls walk for hours each day just to collect it, often returning home with contaminated water that makes their families sick. More than 1000 children die every day from contaminated water. In Gaza, Syria, and Yemen, war has pushed refugee communities to the edge of survival.

This Muharram, we aim to honour Islamic history by taking action. And the greatest gift we can offer, as the Prophet SAW taught us, is water.

Our Water Projects: Something for Every Giver

Over the past decade, GER has completed over 7,000 water projects across Asia and the Middle East, serving villages, orphan communities, refugee camps, schools, mosques, and displaced families. Here is how you can continue that legacy this Muharram:

  • Clean Water Fund — A flexible contribution that goes where the need is greatest. Start from as little as S$10.
  • Water Hand Pumps — Simple, robust wells that bring reliable water access to rural communities. From S$285.
  • Electric Water Wells — High-capacity systems that serve larger populations with consistent, clean water. From S$345.
  • Hybrid Water Wells — Dual manual and electric systems, keeping water flowing even when power is disrupted. From $395.
  • Community Water Wells — Long-term infrastructure that serves entire villages for years to come. From S$895.
  • Solar Water Stations — Sustainable, renewable-energy-powered systems for remote communities that the grid cannot reach. From S$2,255.

Every water source you help build is not just infrastructure. It is a direct response to suffering, and a form of Sadaqah Jariyah whose reward flows on and on, long after you are gone. Prophet Muhammad SAW reminded us:

"When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him."
— Sahih Muslim 1631

A water source is one of the most beautiful expressions of that ongoing charity. Every family that drinks from it, every child who grows up healthy because of it, and every prayer made beside it is a reward that returns to you. And if you cannot afford a full water source, our Clean Water Fund still lets you have a part in these incredible rewards, in shaa Allah!

For the Most Vulnerable: Water Tankers for Gaza, Yemen & Syria

Some families cannot wait for a well to be built. They need water today.

In Gaza, Syria, and Yemen, war and displacement have left millions without reliable access to clean water. Our Water Tanker Project delivers life-saving clean water directly to refugee camps and displaced families, fast.

Here is what your gift delivers:

  • S$25 → 1,000 litres in Syria or Yemen
  • S$150 → 1 full water tanker (6,000 litres) in Syria or Yemen
  • S$75 → 1,000 litres in Gaza
  • S$450 → 1 full water tanker (6,000 litres) in Gaza
  • S$750 → 3 tankers across all three countries (18,000 litres of relief)

One of our beneficiaries in Syria, Hassan Muhammad, shared: "We need food packs, waste management, and help to repair our homes. But water is the most important. No food is still okay for a short time. Water is life."

This Muharram, you can be the reason a refugee family does not struggle without clean water for their daily needs.

Your Mercy Can Flow Beyond This Month

The Prophet SAW told us that giving water is among the greatest acts of charity. And a water well is among the greatest forms of Sadaqah Jariyah. When you give this Muharram, you are not just helping someone today. You are planting a seed that benefits them for years to come and earns you rewards in the Hereafter, long after this sacred month ends.

Every child who lives safely, every mother who no longer has to worry, every prayer made near a well you helped build. All of it, by Allah's SWT permission, returns to you.

Don't wait. Let your mercy flow and start your Islamic new year on a high note!
