Our Prophet and Orphans

How Muhammad SAW’s history shaped his character and forged his lifelong devotion to caring for orphans in need.

The story of the Prophet Muhammad SAW is inseparable from the story of the orphan. Long before he even became a prophet, before revelation descended upon him in the Cave of Hira, Muhammad SAW knew intimately the vulnerability and loneliness that come with losing one's parents.

His father, Abdullah, passed away before his birth, and his beloved mother, Aminah, died when he was only six years old. Raised first by his grandfather and then by his uncle, the Prophet SAW grew up like all orphans do - understanding the struggle of navigating the world without the shelter of parental care.

This profound personal experience shaped not only his character but the very foundation of Islamic teachings on social justice and mercy. When Allah SWT revealed the Qur’an to him years later, the rights of orphans were emphasised repeatedly, making their care an important part of faith.

The Qur’an’s teachings on orphans can be summarised in one simple but powerful command. Allah SWT says in Surah Adh-Dhuha: "So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him]." (Quran 93:9) Here, Allah SWT makes it clear that it is every Muslim’s duty to ensure that orphaned children are safe and free from harm.

Transforming Pain into Purpose

Prophet Muhammad's own experience as an orphan gave him unique insight into the needs of vulnerable children. He didn't just survive his orphanhood - he turned it into a source of empathy that would benefit countless others.

Throughout his prophethood, he consistently advocated for orphans and children in need. He established their rights to inheritance, ensured they couldn't be exploited, and encouraged his companions to take them into their homes and hearts. In a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah RA, the Prophet SAW said: "The best house among the Muslims is a house in which an orphan is well treated, and the worst house among the Muslims is a house in which an orphan is ill-treated." (Ibn Majah 3679)

This wasn't abstract philosophy - it was lived reality in the early Muslim community. The Prophet’s companions opened their homes, shared their resources, and ensured no child was left without support.

Continuing the Prophetic Mission

At Global Ehsan Relief, we’ve made it our mission to carry on this important sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Our orphan sponsorship programme is built on the same principles of compassion and justice that he championed over 1,400 years ago.

We believe every orphaned child deserves not just survival, but also the chance to thrive; to receive good education, proper nutrition, healthcare, and emotional support. When you sponsor an orphan through GER, you're not just donating - you’re changing the trajectory of a child’s life and giving them a road out of poverty.

Here are the different ways you can get involved!

  • Hifz Sponsorship Programme: For orphans enrolled in Qur’an memorisation programs, this sponsorship supports their spiritual education alongside their worldly needs. These children are learning to carry the words of Allah SWT in their hearts, becoming the next generation of Huffaz, in shaa Allah.
  • Non-Hifz Sponsorship Programme: This supports orphans receiving general education - primary, secondary, or vocational training - giving them the tools to build sustainable futures and break cycles of poverty.
  • Partial Sponsorship: We recognise that not everyone can provide full sponsorship, but every contribution matters. Partial sponsorship allows multiple donors to collectively support a child, ensuring everyone has a chance to help.
  • Gift of Hope: If you can’t commit to a regular sponsorship, this programme allows you to make a one-time donation toward our orphan care projects - a meaningful gift from you to them.

Each programme ensures that orphans receive comprehensive support: food, clothing, education fees, healthcare, and most importantly, the knowledge that they are cared for and valued.

A Ripple Effect of Kindness

When you sponsor an orphan, you become part of a beautiful legacy that stretches back to the Prophet Muhammad SAW himself. You're investing in a child's present and future, but you're also investing in your own Hereafter.

As the Prophet SAW said:  "I and the one who cares for an orphan will be in Paradise like these two," and he gestured with his index and middle fingers held together. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5304)

Imagine being so close to our beloved Prophet SAW, the most perfect of Allah SWT’s creations, simply for extending love and support to a child in need! And imagine a child struggling with grief and battling poverty, suddenly knowing someone across the world cares enough to help secure their future.

You can be that someone.
