Hadith about Ramadan

Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said:

“Whenever you sight the new moon (of the month of Ramadan), observe fast, and when you sight it (the new moon of Shawwal), break it, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then observe fast for thirty days”.

– Sahih Muslim

Abu Hurayrah told that Prophet Muhammad said:

“When Ramadan enters, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hellfire are closed, and the devils are chained”.

– Al-Bukhari and Muslim

Abu Huraira (R) reported Allah’s Messenger ﷺ as saying:

“There has come to you Ramadan, a blessed month, which Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has enjoined you to fast. In it the gates of heavens are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and every devil is chained up. In it Allah has a night which is better than a thousand months; whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived.”

– Sunan an-Nasa’i

Hadith about fasting

See examples of Hadiths that address fasting, and the rewards associated with them:

Sahl b. Sa’d (R) reported Allah’s Messenger ﷺ as saying:

“In Paradise there is a gate which is called Rayyan through which only the people who fast would enter on the Day on Resurrection. None else would enter along with them. It would be proclaimed: Where are the people who fast that they should be admitted into it? And when the last of them would enter, it would be closed and no one would enter it.”

– Sahih Muslim

Abu Hurayrah told that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“Every action a son of Adam does shall be multiplied—a good action by ten times its value, up to 700 times. Allah says: With the exception of fasting, which belongs to Me, and I reward it accordingly. For, one abandons his desire and food for My sake. There are two occasions of joy for a fasting person: one when he breaks his fast, and the other when he meets his Lord, and the (bad) breath (of a fasting person) is better in the sight of Allah than the fragrance of musk”.

– Al Bukhari

Abu Huraira tells a hadith on reward of fasting that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. Whoever prays during the nights in Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. And he who passes Lailat Al-Qadr in prayer with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven”.

– Bukhari, Muslim

Hadith about patience

Patience is a huge attribute that is practiced amongst Muslims during the month of Ramadan. Patience and forgiveness go hand-in-hand as both factors result in peace and tranquillity no matter what hardship the believer endures. Above all, one must ponder upon the names of Allah (SWT) and how he is the most merciful and forgiving.

Abu Hurayrah narrated that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“Fasting is a shield, so when one of you is fasting, he should neither indulge in obscene language nor should he raise his voice in anger. If someone attacks him or insults him, let him say: I am fasting”.

– Muslim

Abu Hurayrah told that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“The five (daily) prayers, and from one Friday prayer to the next and from Ramadan to Ramadan, are expiation for sins committed in between, provided one stays away from the major sins”.

– Al-Bukhari

Hadith about kindness

The Prophet (saw) said:

“Indeed among the believers with the most complete faith is the one who is the best in conduct and the most kind to his family.”

– Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2612

The Prophet (saw) said:

“The best of the deeds or deed is the (observance of) prayer at its proper time and kindness to parents.”

– Sahih Muslim

Charity during Ramadan Hadith / Hadith on Zakat

Ibn `Abbas (R) narrated:

“The Prophet ﷺ was the most generous of all the people, and he used to become more generous in Ramadan when Gabriel met him. Gabriel used to meet him every night during Ramadan to revise the Qur’an with him. Allah’s Messenger ﷺ then used to be more generous than the fast wind.”

– Sahih al-Bukhari

Abu Umamah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said in his farewell sermon:

Fear Allah your Lord, pray your five prayers, fast your month of Ramadan, give charity from your wealth, and obey those in authority over you. You will enter the Paradise of your Lord.

–Sunan al-Tirmidhī 616

Hadith about Laylat al Qadr

Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) told that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Whoever spends the night of Lailat Al-Qadr in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven”.

– Al-Bukhaari, 1901; Muslim, 759.

Narrated `Aisha (R): Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said:

“Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.”

– Sahih al-Bukhari
