Ramadan is one of the twelve months in the Islamic lunar calendar which is also known as the Hijri Calendar. The definition of the word "Ramadan" comes from the Arabic root "ramida" or "ar-ramad," meaning scorching heat or dryness. Ramadan takes place in the ninth month and consists of fasting in its entirety. It is also one of the five pillars of Islam.
What The Quran Says About Ramadan
The mention of Ramadan takes place in the holy Quran. Allah SWT mentions Ramadan once in the following verses:
The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.

Changes To Look Out for in Ramadan
The 1st day of Ramadan 2025 will consist of Suhoor, Iftar and Taraweeh. Suhoor is the pre-dawn meal that is consumed by Muslims before Fajr’s call to prayer, it marks the beginning of their fast. Iftar is a meal which is served at the end of the day, marking the breakage of the days fast after Maghrib prayer. You can refer to your local mosque council for a Ramadan Timetable that’ll suggest when to eat during Ramadan. Taraweeh is a special nightly prayer that is observed during the holy month of Ramadan. Muslims pray in congregation at their local mosques whereby the salat (prayer) is led to complete an entire Quran via recitation for the whole month.
Laylatul Qadr
Another important event that takes place during Ramadan is Laylatul Qadr, which is formally known as The Night of Power. The last 10 days of Ramadan 2025 will range from 20th – 30th March 2025 in which The Night of Power can typically fall.
Muslims must spend their time and energy devoting the holy month to Allah SWT in supplications and prayer. They must refrain from all things that are soul-destroying and practice patience, gratitude and appreciation for what Allah SWT has blessed them with.
